Otito Reserve - August 2008

Many, many people are greatly concerned about the loss of 1.1 hectares of Otito Reserve at Matapouri to private ownership. This area of beach front land contains significant wahitapu that should have been protected forever as a condition of sale to the Crown in 1969.

Using the value of neighbouring land as a guide, the ‘lost’ land is worth about $11million. The facts of the loss of land have been put to the Department of Conservation (DoC) and Land Information New Zealand (LINZ) repeatedly. We have asked for meetings to negotiate an acceptable outcome. We have pushed for DoC and LINZ to retrieve the land by supplying them with research and new surveys supporting our claim.

Now, after 10 months of trying to be heard Te Whanau O Rangiwhakaahu Hapu Charitable Trust and Friends of Matapouri have been left with no choice but to take the matter to Court.

We now need to raise funds for court action and a dedicated team of individuals are working hard at organising this effort. We will be sending around details of fundraising activities as they develop.

Our first big fundraising effort is the sale of the painting (on the right) by Matapouri artist Jovian Parry who created this wonderful work when he heard about the loss of the land at Otito Reserve. Those who know and love Matapouri beach will recognise the view looking south to Mangataniwha with Wahitapu Creek in the foreground.

Jovian will donate all the proceeds from the sale to our fighting fund. If you are interested in purchasing this important artwork visit our website or use the contact details under the painting.

Many thanks to Jovian for his incredible generosity.

Your donation will help restore Otito Reserve boundary to the correct survey, to protect the wahitapu and give all New Zealanders the right to enjoy our Crown reserve.

Donations go directly to our legal fund.

Jovian, 24, has grown up in Matapouri village and has a deep connection to this land through his parents and grandparents – encompassing the last 50 years. He now lives in Dunedin where he combines painting with his Honours studies in Anthropology.

Jovian has been painting professionally since he was 17, with 4 / 4 sell-out exhibitions to date. He paints very slowly, and subsequently, the few paintings he does complete each year are usually sold within weeks of completion. Jovian has a list of clients prepared to wait patiently for the next painting to appear on the market.
This painting, "Golden Skies, Matapouri" is his latest completed work. Jovian painted it specifically with a view to raise funds for the Friends of Matapouri campaign to restore the Otito Reserve.

The painting has now sold. Many thanks to Jovian and his family for their support.
